Brass & Burden
Calloused hands circled each compass face with practiced ease, bringing out the grain in the wood—each one hinting at stories beyond its stamped date. A curious resistance emerged when testing their pivots: those made during unstable periods showed distinct wear, as if bracing against unseen forces. These tools, meant to offer direction, subtly registered the pressures of their time; a faint metallic scent rose from the polishing cloth. Even with careful restoration, traces remained—a quiet record layered beneath the smooth glass and brass, suggesting that purpose itself is never wholly untouched by circumstance.
